Enhancing Water Access at Ilkeek Aare Primary School: A Collaborative Effort

At the end of 2019, Ilkeek Aare Primary School (IAPS) in Suswa, Kenya, and the foundation Home4Education (H4E) approached us with their pressing water challenges. Recognizing the importance of sustainable solutions, we embarked on a journey to improve their rainwater harvesting system and water infrastructure in cooperation with H4E. In 2020, we conducted an on-site evaluation, laying the foundation for our partnership with IAPS as their engineering advisor for all construction projects.

Our collaboration with IAPS gained momentum as we delved into addressing their water needs. Utilizing local expertise from engineers Ivy and William, along with the guidance of Michael Muntet as our local liaison, we prioritized understanding the existing rainwater harvesting system’s limitations. Through meticulous data collection and analysis in the past, we identified key areas for improvement and are now in the implementation phase.

In October 2023, we undertook a second evaluation trip, further solidifying our commitment to finding sustainable solutions. This visit provided invaluable insights that shaped our action plan. Leveraging the school’s existing infrastructure, we devised a comprehensive strategy to maximize rainwater collection, distribution, and storage. Our actions and suggestions are also strongly supported by the foundation H4E, which provides the financial basis for this project.
The action plan entails the construction of new plastic tanks, installation of underground PE pipes, and repairs to existing masonry tanks. Additionally, measures such as first flush devices will be implemented to enhance water quality and minimize wastage.

Our collaborative approach, involving local partners and the supporting foundation H4E, ensures that the project progresses effectively. We are driven by the belief that access to clean water is a fundamental right, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to realizing this vision for IAPS.
If you’d like to support our efforts in providing clean water to Ilkeek Aare Primary School, consider donating to IngOG (see the details below). Your contributions will directly contribute to the implementation of sustainable water solutions, ensuring a brighter future for the school’s students and the surrounding community. Together, we can make a lasting difference in their lives.
