Provision of drinking water in Akongo, Cameroon

Lack of access to clean drinking water remains a serious problem in Cameroon, where the effects of stomach infections and similar illnesses, including high levels of school absenteeism, are well-known problems.

Originally proposed by ALKA (an organisation of alumni returning to Cameroon), this project under evaluation has three main objectives. First of all, to allow access to clean drinking water in Cameroon. Secondly, to tackle Cholera and other diseases borne by unclean water, therefore reducing days lost to sickness and consequently improving school performance. Third is the promotion of sustainable health and hygiene practices through ongoing education in the villages.

The project has initially been planned to include 500 homes and the next steps are to be defined. These include assembling an evaluation team who will prepare for an on-site evaluation before it is undertaken. The possible solutions will also need to be appraised in advance, which could include use of fountains, various filtration methods or collection of rainwater.
