1. Introduction & Context
Following the Immersive Study Tour and the digital literacy project, IngOG+ continues its collaboration with the community of Nilkantha Municipality, Dhading, Nepal through targeted infrastructure initiatives. Regular exchanges with local stakeholders have helped identify key challenges affecting daily life, particularly related to water supply reliability and damage caused by lightning. These issues highlight the need for small-scale but impactful improvements that strengthen existing infrastructure while supporting long-term community resilience. Building on the trust and shared understanding developed during earlier initiatives, IngOG+ and local partners are working together to define practical and context-appropriate solutions.
2. Project goal
The project focuses on improving essential infrastructure in Nilkantha through two main objectives. The first is to enhance water availability by assessing whether an additional reservoir is needed to reduce shortages and ensure a more reliable daily supply. To support this decision, the existing water system will be documented in a structured and comprehensive manner.
The second objective is to evaluate lightning protection measures for the village pump station in order to reduce outages and improve system reliability. In addition, a potential WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) project at the local primary school is being explored to sustainably improve hygiene conditions and water-related infrastructure for students and staff.
3. Current Activities
As a first step, IngOG+ will support the development of a comprehensive Water Map. This baseline assessment will document water sources, pipelines, storage facilities, and distribution points, while also identifying current bottlenecks and operational challenges within the system.
The Water Map will provide a clear and shared understanding of the existing infrastructure, enabling both local stakeholders and IngOG+ to make informed decisions. Based on this analysis, the team will evaluate whether constructing a new reservoir is the most appropriate solution, or whether targeted improvements to the current system could achieve more efficient and sustainable results.
In parallel, assessments of the pump station will be conducted to identify suitable lightning protection measures, ensuring a more reliable operation of critical infrastructure.
4. Expected Impact
Following the study tour, defining clear priorities for the community required time, dialogue, and alignment with local stakeholders. Discussions with municipal representatives, including the mayor, helped identify water supply and lightning protection as key focus areas for future action.
Looking ahead, IngOG+ aims to further strengthen local ownership by transferring responsibility for field coordination and communication to Engineers Without Borders Nepal, while continuing to provide technical expertise and mentoring support. The completion of the Water Map will serve as a critical milestone, enabling informed decision-making and jointly defining the next steps for improving infrastructure in Nilkantha.
