1. Introduction & Context
In rural southern Nepal, near the Indian border, many families lacked access to essential medical care. The hospital in Ratnanagar was increasingly overwhelmed due to a rapidly rising birth rate, putting pressure on staff and resources. Maternal and newborn health services were limited, and specialized care for women was insufficient. To respond to these challenges, the Spital Limmattal Association launched the “Hospital Extension for Gynaecology and Obstetrics” project, aiming to expand and equip the hospital and create a dedicated centre for women’s health. IngOG+ supported the project from 2019 onwards, contributing technical expertise and professional guidance throughout planning and construction.
2. Project Goal
The project aimed to improve maternal and newborn care by expanding and modernizing the hospital with a specialized gynaecology and obstetrics centre. By providing additional space and modern facilities, the hospital was able to deliver safer, higher-quality care to women and infants. The initiative focused on supporting mothers and newborns who previously had limited access to specialized health services. IngOG+ contributed technical guidance, professional oversight, and partial financing, ensuring that planning and construction met international standards while remaining practical and adapted to local conditions.
3. Approach & Technical Solution
After an initial needs assessment and workshops with local doctors, authorities, and stakeholders in February 2020, IngOG+ supported the planning and implementation phases. The project collaborated with the architectural office Marazzi+Paul Architekten (Zurich), which translated the requirements into detailed building plans. A two-storey extension was built, adding approximately 1,500 m² of usable space, including specialized wards, consultation rooms, and treatment facilities for maternal and newborn care. IngOG+ provided technical advice, coordinated with local partners, and supported financing to ensure construction aligned with professional standards while remaining responsive to the hospital’s and community’s needs.
4. Lessons Learnt & Impact
The project highlighted the importance of combining technical expertise with local knowledge. Early workshops and engagement with stakeholders ensured the extension reflected real needs and priorities of the community. The dedicated gynaecology and obstetrics centre enabled the hospital to care for more patients safely, reducing maternal and infant health risks. Collaboration with local doctors, authorities, and international architects strengthened planning quality.
